• Introduction to Nelius Cronin: A renowned traditional flute player and piper from Blackpool, Cork.


• Early Musical Involvement: By 1916, Nelius was involved with the Fianna. He later joined a notable trio with Jimi O’Mahony and Leo Rowsome, which opened 2RN, the first radio station in Cork.


• Pipe Major: Elected as the pipe major of the Cork Volunteer Pipe Band, leading them to win the All-Ireland championship in Dublin.

• Feis Cheoil Winner: Won first prize and a gold medal at Dublin’s prestigious Feis Cheoil. His gold medal was later used in a mass chalice by Father Fionnbarra.


• Family and Community: The Cronin family was known for their hospitality and support for freedom fighters. His sister became a Poor Clare nun in Birmingham.


• Contributions to Music: Founded and trained the Ballingeary Pipe Band, which still functions. He was dedicated to promoting Irish music and language.


• Death and Legacy: Advised to go to Switzerland for tuberculosis treatment, he died shortly after arriving. His funeral was one of the largest in Cork, second only to that of Lord Mayor Traolach Mac Suibhne.


• Lasting Influence: Nelius is remembered for his loyalty to Irish ideals, music, and culture. His pursuit of perfection in music is celebrated, and his legacy continues through young musicians like his descendant, Gearóid De Roiste.
