Not only did Montgomery give them permission, but he also sent a ten-shilling donation to help the band get started.

FMM’s early years were spent working their way through the lower grades of competition. Under the leadership of their first pipe major, Billy Maxwell, the band started to build its reputation. Billy’s influence remained strong throughout the band’s history, as he stayed connected with FMM until his passing in 2013.

In the 1970s, the band merged with Raffrey Pipe Band to become Freymont, but this merger was short-lived. In 1976, the band reformed as Field Marshal Montgomery, and by 1981, Richard Parkes took over as Pipe Major, a pivotal moment for the band.

Richard Parkes: The Driving Force

Richard Parkes, now a legend in the pipe band world, became Pipe Major in 1981 and quickly set the band on a path to success. Under his leadership, FMM won its first major Grade 1 championship in 1990 at the Cowal Championships, followed by the band’s first World Championship in 1992. This win elevated the band to international fame, marking the beginning of FMM’s rise to the top.

Richard’s leadership has often been described as the “Richard Parkes Success Story,” but it’s not just about him. The band, driven by its shared passion for excellence, has achieved an incredible number of victories under his guidance, including 12 World Pipe Band Championship titles, three ‘Grand Slams’ (winning all five major titles in a single season), and 14 Champions of Champions titles. Richard’s impact on the band is undeniable, and his dedication earned him an MBE in 2004 for his contributions to pipe band music in Northern Ireland.

Overcoming Challenges

Not every year has been smooth sailing for FMM. In 2004, Pipe Major Richard Parkes suffered a stroke, a moment that shook the piping world. However, the band rallied together under the temporary leadership of Pipe Sergeant Alastair Dunn, winning key championships while Richard recovered. In a remarkable comeback, Richard returned later that same year and led the band to three more championship titles, including their fourth World Championship.

While the band is rooted in Northern Ireland, it has attracted members from across the globe, with players from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the USA, Denmark, France, Scotland, England, and both Northern and Southern Ireland. This international influence has only strengthened the band’s position as a global force in the pipe band world.

The band is also well-known for its high-quality performances outside of competitions. FMM has performed at various concerts, festivals, and events, and has released five successful albums, including Début, Live in Concert, and IMPACT – Live at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

In 2024, after 43 years as Pipe Major, Richard Parkes retired, marking the end of an era for the band. He was succeeded by Matt Wilson, the band’s long-serving Pipe Sergeant. Matt, who has been a member since 2005, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to his new role, and under his guidance, FMM looks set to continue its legacy of excellence.
