The Malahide Pipe Band, re-established in 1954, traces its roots to a Fife & Drum Band formed in Malahide around 1915. In the years since, it has developed into a dedicated group focused on piping and drumming, becoming a familiar presence in County Dublin. The early reformation of the band owes much to Michael Mahony and Michael Byrne, who revived local interest in pipe music and secured a space for practice in an old church hall near the estuary. They also introduced piping competitions at Malahide Castle, a tradition that has grown significantly, with the All Ireland Pipe Band Competition regularly held there today.
The band’s current activities reflect a commitment to building musical skills in the community. This autumn (2024), the Malahide Pipe Band has opened its doors to beginners of all ages, providing classes for those interested in learning the pipes or drums. These lessons give young people a chance to learn a musical instrument, perform in public, and gain confidence through group performance. For adults, the classes offer an opportunity to pick up a new skill in a supportive environment, with many drawn by the powerful sound of pipes and drums. Information evenings and local classes are planned, allowing new members to join and be part of this long-standing group.

The band room, a central point for these activities, was constructed in 1952-53 by John Mahon, who passed away young before its completion. Early members practiced in a barn near Millfort Estate, which was owned by Fanny Mahon. Through the support of locals like Joe Dignam, who provided building materials, the band finally established a permanent space that has since hosted countless rehearsals and gatherings.

Over the years, the Malahide Pipe Band has seen many dedicated members, including Mick Cave, Michael Byrne, Cyril Lee, Tommy McGahan, Peter Farnell, and Jimmy Connolly. The band also has connections with other local groups, such as St. Sylvester’s Pipe Band. With notable musicians like Ann Curran, who played with the Emerald Girls Pipe Band, and Eugene Lambe, a respected Uilleann pipe maker, it shows the great quality musicians that have passed through the band over the years.

Today, the Malahide Pipe Band continues to engage the community in piping and drumming, welcoming newcomers and celebrating a tradition that has been part of the Malahide and Dublin area for generations. For anyone interested in joining or learning more, the band’s current offerings make it a fitting time to connect with this historic group.
