The History of the Clonbony Pipe Band
The Clonbony Pipe Band - 1936. Founded by Tom Malone with members from Miltown Malbay and surrounding areas.
The Clonbony Pipe Band, formed in 1936, was the vision of Tom Malone from Miltown Malbay, County Clare. Located just north of Miltown Malbay, the small townland of Clonbony became home to a musical tradition that left its mark in the years leading up to World War II.
The late Tom Malone of Miltown Malbay (RIP) who developed many things in the community.
The band’s first parade took place in 1937, a significant achievement that highlighted its early connection with the Irish Pipe Band Association (IPBA) during the period of 1936 to 1939. This recognition positioned the Clonbony Pipe Band within the wider community of Irish piping at the time.
The outbreak of war saw a decline in the band’s activities, a fate shared by many similar groups during those challenging years. However, the Clonbony Pipe Band experienced a revival in the 1950s, a testament to the enduring interest in traditional Irish music in the area.
Tom Malone was not only instrumental in forming the band but also played a key role in the establishment of the local GAA club in Clonbony. His dedication to fostering community spirit and culture is remembered fondly. Today, his legacy continues through his son, Seán Malone, who serves as the club secretary.
Interestingly, Miltown Malbay is home to a pub called "Tom Malone's Markethouse Bar," though it remains unclear if this establishment is connected to the same Tom Malone who contributed so much to the cultural and sporting life of the region.
While detailed records of the Clonbony Pipe Band’s activities are scarce, its story reflects the vibrant intersection of music and community in County Clare. The townland’s links to traditional Irish music, the GAA, and its connection to the rich heritage of Miltown Malbay ensure that the memory of the band and its contributions are not forgotten.
