St. Kevin’s Pipe Band: Reviving Bray’s Bagpiping Tradition

Originally established in 1912, St. Kevin’s Pipe Band disbanded in the mid-1990s after the death of its long-time leader, Billy Brierton. The band's absence left a noticeable gap in Bray's cultural landscape. Determined to revive this cherished tradition, local councillor Brian Kenny spearheaded the effort to reform the band. "It was a shame to see such a long-standing tradition end, so we got some of the members back together and set in train the reformation of the group," said Kenny.

Under the experienced leadership of Christy Reilly, a 12-strong troupe of Bray musicians proudly donned the colors of St. Kevin’s Pipe Band for the recent parade. The band has since resumed weekly rehearsals at St. Cronan’s School, a familiar and fitting venue for their practices. "We are hopeful that the project can now go from strength to strength, and to that end, we are hoping to attract new members in the weeks and months ahead," Reilly noted.

The reformed band has ambitious plans. "Ultimately, we want to reassemble a 20-strong pipe band for Bray. If we can do that, we will take up an invitation to travel to Dublin, California, and participate in their St. Patrick's Day parade next year," added Kenny.

Many great musicians from St. Kevin’s Pipe Band in Bray went on to play with high level competitive bands like St. Laurence O’Toole’s in county Dublin.

For those interested in joining or supporting the band, St. Kevin’s Pipe Band holds rehearsals every Tuesday and Thursday night at St. Cronan’s School. More information can be obtained by contacting Brian Kenny at 2863574 or Christy Reilly at 2863077.

St. Kevin’s Pipe Band is not just about music; it’s about community, heritage, and the enduring spirit of Bray. By bringing back the band, the members are not only preserving a piece of history but also ensuring that future generations can enjoy and participate in this vibrant aspect of Irish culture.
